I'm late on this entry because I'm still recovering. My sister and her band, Blondsai, plus the other band touring with them, The Lexington Arrows , stormed through Chicago on a tsunami of whiskey. The played Phyllis' Musical Inn, not my favorite venue but still one of the best dive bars in Chicago. The crowd was decent enough, but like all Chicago shows, nobody could be bothered to stand close to the bands playing but the other bands that played.
Impressions: of course I automatically like Blondsai, since my sister's in it, but I had no idea how good she was with guitar. Plus she jumps around and falls over constantly while playing, which puts her playing on a completely different level. Their bassist, Curt plays in both bands on tour. In fact, he's in so many different bands, they had a festival for him in Baltimore called "Curtfest." (5 different bands). Tiff was great on vocals, despite having a broken collarbone. I've since heard that their drummer Rob just about dislocated his shoulder while playing in Milwaukee on Tuesday. They're playing St. Louis tonight, so if you're out there, stop by Lemmon's.
Four of the people on tour stayed with local band The Safes (yet another myspace link! do people use the rest of the internet anymore?), and the other four stayed at my house, hanging out and drinking until 5 am or so, plus random madness. They had a day off (Monday) but nobody wanted to do anything since it was raining. We ended up visiting Reckless and Myopic, of course, before retreating back to Swampyhaus. Matt Brown came over and cooked up some fracking awesome cuisine - Teriyaki Salmon, Roast Pork, Crushed Potatoes, Grilled Veggies - it was gone in minutes. Him and I spent all Sunday making Chicken Parmesean and Eggplant Parmesean, though the eggplant was ruined by some bad imitation mozz. we bought (we didn't see the word "imitation" on the label, just the extremely low price.} I made some Potatoes Au Gratin around 3 am, I think.
Anyhow, my belly's full, and I got to jam with my crazy sister for two days. Not a bad weekend for me. Now I've got to crank these character designs out. Oy vey.
